Cross River State: Villages
Five villages in Cross River State were carefully selected by LENF as a result of extensive research and consultation with different groups of people and individuals in the state:
The villages are located within tropical, high altitude forests. They have a range of environmental problems ranging from widespread deforestation and chemical fishing to lack of drinking water and poor sanitation. Another problem for the majority of these communities is the lack of access roads, which hinders an open market for their produce.
Villagers in Cross River State requested training in organisational management and forest management skills. Efficient management of non-timber forest products is particularly important for the women of the village who have traditionally harvested these products.
Through support for community forestry, LENF's programme in Cross River State aimed to develop a viable solution to deforestation and rural poverty.
