Bayelsa State - Villages

Communities in Bayelsa have been carefully selected by LENF as a result of extensive research and consultation with different groups of people and individuals in the Delta.

Two clusters of fourteen villages were selected for the Living Earth Environmental Action Programme (LEEAP). They are located in different ecosystems but each cluster shares the same natural resources.

Cluster 1 - Akipelia/Oloibiri axis:

Akipelai, Oloibiri, Emakalakala, Opumatubo (Opume), Otuogidi, Abobiri
Communities in this cluster share a common area of swamp forest and brackish mangrove swamp. The cluster borders Nembe in the south and Kolo Creek in the north.

Cluster 2 - Biseni:

Tein, Tuburu, Egbebiri, Akpite, Oturuama, Kalama, Igelega, Ebila

These communities often share common natural resources and some fall within a SPDC/Agip/Elf concession area.

The richest areas for biodiversity are the freshwater swamp and barrier island forests. The lowland forest has practically disappeared and the mangrove forests are very low in species diversity.
