Leading Sustainable Development Training

Living Earth Nigeria Foundation is facilitating a training programme in the Niger Delta: Leading Sustainable Development for Local Government Officials which was designed based on a training needs assessment carried out in 2004 by Living Earth.

Following the success of the first year's pilot programme in Bayelsa State, the second pilot stage is now underway in Delta State. It is anticipated that the programme will gradually be upscaled to cover all of the states in the Delta region.

The overall aim is to build the capacity of government institutions to enable them to take the lead in the sustainable development of the Delta.

The one-year programme incorporates seven training workshops, a series of individual study activities, evidence of learning tasks and learners’ support workshops. The London Open College Network is formally accrediting the training.

The programme has now entered its second year and there are 60 participants following this year's training course, which runs from July 2008 to July 2009.

There were 33 participants on the first year of the course; 29 from local government councils, 2 from the ministry of local government and 2 from the local government service commission. 

The Living Earth training approach emphasises action learning and a participative approach, and adopts a rich mix of training experiences to achieve the learning objectives.

As part of the programme 5 local NGO practitioners, three from Living Earth Nigeria Foundation (LENF) and two from Institute for Sustainable Development of Pro-Natura International (PNI/ISD) have been trained to facilitate the training modules.
